
UPDATE MARCH 2000
The following is a brief update of the CCJP/JCTR Debt Project activities over the past several months.
The Jubilee 2000 Zambia Campaign is part of the CCJP/JCTR Debt Project. The Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace (CCJP) and the Jesuit Centre for Theological Reflection (JCTR) co-operate on many issues of social justice and peace as embodied in the church's social teachings.
Past Activities

| March 14, 2000 | Representatives of 30 local NGOs, trade
unions, church groups, and the University of Zambia attended the workshop. The presenters
included Neville Gabriel from Jubilee 2000-South Africa, Theo Kniefel from KASA, Germany
and Barbara Kalima former co-ordinator Jubilee 2000-Zambia The Workshop focused on finding out the possibility of Zambian civil society to engage fully in a campaign against apartheid-caused debt.Workshop report is available.You may Contact CCJP/JCTR debt Project for a copy. |
| February24,2000 | Held a one-day Jubilee 2000 National Conference with the theme;Will Debt Reduction mean Poverty Reduction.The aim of the conference was to review the recent development vis-à-vis HIPC and PRGF in order to spell the way forward for the national Jubilee 2000 movement. |
| February 2000 | Conducted an opinion poll as a follow-up to the poll conducted in 1998. The current poll was conducted so as to ascertain whether more people have knowledge on debt cancellation campaign and also find out the people's opinion on how and where they feel debt relief should be spent. |
| January 2000 | Participated
at the Southern African Capacity Building Workshop with the aim of consolidating the
regional campaign for debt cancellation and other issues relating to globalisation. Sponsored 4-30 minutes episode radio drama in vernacular (Chinyanja) on the national radio station, ZNBC. This was done in order to reach out to a wider audience especially those people who can not get the debt cancellation message in English. |
| Continuing Activities: | |
| ¨ Sponsoring this year's schools' debate league in 20 different schools in Lusaka province to create awareness among pupils on the debt problem. | |
| ¨ Floating the "Debt Mechanism " proposal with a view to putting in place a body, which will be charged with the full responsibility of monitoring debt cancellation and the direction of freed resources into poverty eradication, programmes. | |
| ¨ Continuing public education about debt issues and gathering signatures for debt cancellation. | |
| ¨ Posting on our web site articles from the Debt Project and circulating materials through e-mail. | |
| ¨ Co-operating with international partners of Jubilee 2000 to gather support for Zambian debt cancellation. | |
| Future Planned Activities | |
| ¨ Prepare educational materials in simple vernacular languages in order to cover a wider section of the Zambian population. | |
| ¨ Use simple and readable cartoons as a way of putting the debt message across to the nation. | |
| ¨ Explore possibilities for local conferences outside Lusaka to promote awareness and involvement across the country. | |
| ¨ Organize a public rally in May 2000 as a follow-up to the national event organised in May last year. | |
