The Rural Basket was launched in November 2007.Unlike the Basic Needs Basket, which is a market survey, the Rural Basket is a household survey which measures food security. This is because we realise that the rural economy is not purely a money economy but is based on both money and exchange of goods for goods. In addition the rural basket is conducted on a quarterly basis out of the realisation that food security is largely dependent on seasonality It was initially conducted in three places but has in the recent past increased in scope to be done in six selected areas which are: 1. Malama, Masumba and Mpomwa in Mambwe (Eastern Province) 2. Saka,Lisomona and Fifungo in Masaiti (Copper belt Province) 3. Matushi, Kalonga Westand Kawama in Mufumbwe (North- Western Province) 4. Mwalumina,Shikabeta and Tengama in Chongwe (Lusaka Province) 5. Libala, Moomba and Sikanauzwe in Kazungula (Southern Province) 6. Kalongola, Mulele and Ngandwe in Shangombo (Western Province) The Rural Basket is greatly aiding our advocacy efforts for rural situations. Below are some Rural Baskets: Eastern Province- Mambwe District 2012
Copper belt Province- Masaiti District
North Western Province- Mufumbwe District
Lusaka Province- Chongwe District
