JCTR UPDATE: PEOPLE AND ACTIVITIES

GLOBALISATION:  Professor David Hollenbach, S.J., a social ethician from Boston College, USA, presented an overview of the challenges arising from globalisation at a JCTR seminar in October.  He also met with members of the Permanent Human Rights Commission to discuss the same topic.

POVERTY REDUCTION STRATEGY PAPER:  The Debt Project has been coordinating civil society’s participation in the PRSP process.  Chrispin Mphuka spoke about this to a gathering of Members of Parliament, urging wider participation and full accountability in the design and implementation of poverty reduction policies.

APARTHEID-CAUSED DEBT:  At a recent conference in Germany, Charity Musamba presented a study on the effects of South Africa’s apartheid regime on Zambia’s economic and social development. 

COST OF LIVING:  Muweme Muweme is designing a new project that will begin in January in cooperation with OXFAM, that looks at the issue of school fees and their effects on educational opportunities for children from poor families.  Both household surveys and budgetary analysis will be carried out.
